Te Papa

Yesterday we went to Te Papa. We looked at the Marae. It represents a big body because of it's shape. The inside is the spine and ribs. We also looked at green stone that was carved into a tiki. We had lots of fun.

TE PAPA

Yesterday the Year 3's went to Te Papa. We left school at 9:15am on the bus. First we had to play a card game and we had to put in order what happens in a powhiri. A powhiri is a special welcome onto a marae. We learnt some new words: Tiki is a pendent made from greenstone; koha means gift. We also listened to a mihi (speech) and a waiata (song). The mihi we listened to was about the land and birds becoming extinct and the song was about this too. The waiata always matches the subject of the mihi. It was so much fun.
Afterwards we got to have free time and see other things in Te Papa. We went in the Earthquake House.

Year 3 trip to Te Papa

On Wednesday 2nd September Year 3 went to Te Papa on the bus to learn about powhiri. A powhiri is a special welcome onto a marae. First we looked at a waharoa which is a doorway to a village. Waha means mouth and roa means long. So the waharoa is a large entrance way. Next we went to some pounamu - greenstone used for making necklaces for special people. We learnt what wero means a challenge and koha means a gift.

I liked the part when we watched the 3d squid and the part when we got to have a free choice.

A vist to Te Papa

Yesterday Room 8 and Room 10 went to Te papa to explore the Maori marae and we looked at the waharoa which is a doorway to a maori village. When the Maori warriors come and put a feather or a leaf and if the vistors pick up the leaf then the people are friends. Then we went to two meeting houses the first house was a traditional maori meeting house which represents the shape of a body. The front is the arms and the back is the legs and inside the roof is the spine and the ribs. The second marae was filled with modern stories for all New Zealanders.
